The Association of British Neurologists (ABN) meeting in Birmingham attracted just under 800 delegates—a new record. A great venue, good weather and a programme packed with matters of interest all contributed to a successful meeting. Time was invested during the Annual General Meeting and the business session to facilitate discussion on Acute Neurology following on from last year’s ABN Acute Neurology report (https://www.theabn.org/news/abn-acute-neurology-report.html) as well as discussion on Getting It Right First Time (http://gettingitrightfirsttime.co.uk/medical-specialties/neurology/) led by Geraint Fuller.

Invited speakers

John Trojanowski of the University of Pennsylvania delivered the Gordon Holmes lecture entitled, ‘Tau strains and spreading in pure tauopathy and Alzheimer’s disease’, with an exemplary overview of tau in neurodegeneration. Bastiaan Bloem of Radboud University delivered the Practical Neurology lecture entitled, ‘Bringing neurology care back home’, showing how to improve care for patients with Parkinson’s is so much about improving the networks in the community and thinking beyond just pills.

There was an excellent poster session celebrating, in this the 100th anniversary since women were allowed to vote, some of the fantastic female leaders in Neurology including Helen Dimsdale, Dorothy Russell, Marcia Wilkinson, Bidi Evans, Hilary Morgan, Margaret Barrie, Anita Harding, Sheila Wallace, Elizabeth Warrington and Pauline Monro.

Sarah Morgan from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency spoke on the new guidance on sodium valproate (https://www.theabn.org/news/valproate-and-childbearing-potential-new-regulations.html).

Winners of the 2018 prizes were:

  • Case presentation: Amy Ross Russell Practical Neurology

  • Quality and training: Dipa Rayan Charles Symonds

  • Platform: Thomas Cope Charles Symonds

  • Poster: Keira Markey Charles Symonds

The meeting ended on a high note with the clinicopathological conference superbly delivered by David McKee (ANSWER—MELAS in pregnancy).
