The Gloucester neurology book club met in the sunny outdoors to talk about Talk, a book that examines the everyday phenomenon of conversation. Elizabeth Stokoe, its author, Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University, UK, presents her case that conversation is a worthy and fruitful object of inquiry, which can be used for good (or ill). The book broadly comprises the author setting out principles and techniques of conversation analysis drawn from dialogue, interspersed with notes on the history of conversation analysis, and advice about how to use conversation effectively. The relevance of this subject to those of who rely heavily on conversing, particularly with patients, animated our discussion.
